Hockey player Balbir Singh died, Akshay Kumar wrote condolences – great hockey

Superstar Akshay Kumar has mourned the demise of former hockey player Balbir Singh Dosanjh alias Balbir Singh Sr. He shared a photo of himself with the player on Twitter and described him as a person of amazing personality.

Akshay wrote in the caption, “Sad to hear about the passing of hockey great Balbir Singh ji. Sometime back I had the privilege of meeting him. Such a wonderful personality! My heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Balbir was in a coma for a week
Balbir, aged 95, was admitted to Mohali Fortis Hospital on May 8 due to pneumonia and fever. He had three heart attacks during treatment. After this, blood clots accumulate in the brain and on May 18, he would go into a coma. He breathed his last at around 6:30 am on Monday morning.

Scored 5 goals in the final of the Helsinki Olympics
Balbir Singh scored 5 goals against the Netherlands in the final of the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. His record of scoring the most goals in an Olympic final is still maintained. Hindustan won this match 6–1.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist
Balbir London (1948), Helsinki (1952) and Melbourne (1956) were part of the Indian team that won gold in the Olympics. He was included among the 16 greatest players in modern Olympic history by the International Olympic Committee. He was the only player in the country to be included in this list. Apart from this, he was also the first player to win the Padma Shri (1957). Balbir was the manager of the Indian team that won the only Hockey World Cup in 1975.
