Health officials have issued a warning to recent travelers out of two D.C. airports about potential exposure to measles. A person with a confirmed case of measles had traveled through Northern Virginia after returning from an overseas trip. The potential exposure is linked to specific timeframes at both Dulles International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Authorities are currently working diligently to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the infected person, including passengers on specific flights. Health officials are urging those who may have been exposed to monitor themselves for symptoms until January 25, 2024. It is crucial that individuals experiencing symptoms immediately isolate themselves and contact a healthcare provider.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be transmitted through respiratory droplets. Symptoms can manifest within one to two weeks after infection, and may include fever, cough, rash, and red watery eyes.
This recent case in Virginia adds to the string of potential measles outbreaks occurring across the country. Other outbreaks have been reported in New Jersey and Philadelphia. In fact, around 20 to 30 people were potentially exposed to measles at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware on December 29, 2023.
It is vital for individuals who may have been exposed to take necessary precautions and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms. The spread of measles can be minimized through proper diagnosis, isolation, and treatment. Health officials are urging the public to stay vigilant and follow recommended guidelines to prevent further outbreaks.
