A powerful earthquake struck eastern Taiwan, causing significant damage in the county of Hualien near the epicenter. The 6.1 magnitude earthquake resulted in 131 people being reported trapped in the aftermath, as officials worked tirelessly to free them from the rubble.
Video footage captured the devastation in Hualien, with buildings left partially collapsed and standing at an angle. American resident, Jason Delickta, shared his experience of the earthquake, describing the damage to his restaurant which included shattered plates, liquor bottles, and glasses.
The earthquake also disrupted rail services and damaged the main road into Hualien, impacting businesses and tourism in the area. The aftermath of the earthquake was felt throughout Taiwan, leading to the suspension of metro systems in several cities, although services were mostly restored.
