James McCaffrey, best known for his role as Max Payne in the popular video game franchise and his appearance on the hit FX drama Rescue Me, has tragically passed away at the age of 65. McCaffrey’s manager confirmed that the actor died from multiple myeloma cancer.
McCaffrey’s career had many highlights, but his breakthrough came with his role in the TV legal drama series Civil Wars. He quickly became a protege under the renowned television producer Dick Wolf, and went on to appear in several of his series including Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: CI.
Over the course of his 35-year career, McCaffrey made regular appearances on episodic TV shows such as Sex and the City, Madam Secretary, and Suits. However, his most memorable role came in FX’s Rescue Me, where he portrayed a New York firefighter who tragically lost his life on 9/11. Throughout the series, McCaffrey’s character appeared as a ghost or a memory, hauntingly reminding his cousin of the events that took place on that fateful day.
In addition to his on-screen work, McCaffrey was also known for his voice work in video games. He lent his voice to the iconic Max Payne franchise and the popular Alan Wake games, adding depth and emotion to the characters he portrayed.
Following the news of McCaffrey’s passing, actor Kevin Dillon paid tribute to his dear friend on Instagram, referring to him as his best friend. The two had formed a close bond over the years, and Dillon’s tribute serves as a testament to McCaffrey’s impact on those around him.
McCaffrey is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom and their daughter Tiernan McCaffrey. Our thoughts go out to McCaffrey’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, as they mourn the loss of a talented actor who left a lasting impression on the entertainment industry.
