New Record: TSA Discovers Highest Number of Firearms at Airport Checkpoints in 2023
Jala News – In a troubling development for airport security, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported a record-breaking number of firearms discovered at security checkpoints in 2023. A staggering total of 6,737 firearms were intercepted, averaging to an alarming count of 18 firearms per day.
What is even more concerning is that a remarkable 93% of the firearms discovered were loaded, presenting a significant risk to airport security. This number surpasses the previous record of 6,542 firearms found in 2022, highlighting the growing concerns surrounding aviation safety.
Expressing deep concern, TSA Administrator David Pekoske emphasized the unnecessary risk these loaded firearms pose to everyone at the checkpoints. Pekoske called for increased awareness among passengers to ensure strict compliance with regulations.
It is worth noting that passengers are allowed to travel with firearms in their checked baggage, as long as they are unloaded and secured in a locked hard-sided container. However, these firearms must be declared to the airline at the ticket counter. Failure to follow these protocols can lead to serious repercussions.
Unsurprisingly, the nation’s busiest airports experienced the highest number of firearms discoveries. Atlanta’s Hartsfield–Jackson International and Dallas Fort Worth International topped the list, raising concerns about the effectiveness of security measures.
The most common reason cited by passengers for the presence of firearms in their carry-on bags is forgetfulness. It is a stark reminder of the need for thorough checks and vigilance when packing for air travel.
The increase in firearm ownership and variations in local gun laws across the country were cited by TSA spokesperson Alexa Lopez as contributing factors to this alarming trend. It calls for both improved passenger education about these regulations and a reevaluation of firearm storage and transportation laws.
When firearms are discovered, the TSA promptly contacts local law enforcement to handle the situation. Depending on local laws, the passenger may face arrest or citation. The severity of consequences faced by violators includes fines of up to $15,000, loss of TSA PreCheck eligibility for at least five years, and enhanced screening.
It is crucial for travelers to comprehend and adhere to the regulations set forth by the TSA to prevent these breaches in airport security. Enhanced awareness and stricter compliance will play a crucial role in ensuring a safe and secure travel experience for all passengers.
