The planned expansion of Tesla’s factory near Berlin sparked a major protest on Friday as around 800 activists gathered outside the plant to voice their opposition. Organized by Disrupt, a coalition of anti-capitalist groups, the protest quickly escalated as some activists clashed with police while attempting to break into the facility.
Police were forced to temporarily stop rail traffic in the area as they worked to control the situation. Disrupt argues that Tesla’s expansion plans pose a threat to the local environment, leading to heightened tensions between protesters and law enforcement.
Despite their efforts, protesters were unable to breach the fence line surrounding the factory. Tesla CEO Elon Musk reassured the public that the fence lines were still intact, ensuring the safety of the facility. In anticipation of the protest, Tesla had shut the factory to all employees, with production lines already halted in January.
This is not the first time the factory has faced disruptions, as it was forced to close in March following an arson attack. Police in Brandenburg are prepared for extensive operations and have made it clear that they will intervene resolutely if any crimes are committed during the protests.
The clash between activists and authorities highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Tesla’s presence in the region. As the company continues to expand its operations, it faces mounting opposition from environmentalists and anti-capitalist groups who are determined to make their voices heard.
