Portuguese President Advocates for Compensation to Former Colonies
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has called for Lisbon to compensate its former colonies, including canceling debt, in a move to address the country’s difficult colonial past. However, the government has denied plans for reparations for trans-Atlantic slavery and colonialism.
Despite not taking specific actions for paying reparations, Portugal is focused on deepening relations, historical truth, and close cooperation with its former colonies. The colonial era lasted over five centuries, with decolonization occurring in 1974.
President de Sousa has suggested various ways to pay reparations, such as canceling debt or providing special cooperation programs. The center-right Democratic Alliance, which has been governing Portugal since a snap election in March, maintains excellent relations with former colonies in terms of financial and economic cooperation.
While there are no current plans for formal reparations, the Portuguese government is emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the past and working towards stronger relationships with its former colonies. Stay tuned to Jala News for further updates on this developing story.
