Headline: Infected Food Handlers Identified as Culprits in Two Norovirus Outbreaks in Spain
In a recent study, researchers have shed light on the vital role of infected food handlers in two separate norovirus outbreaks that occurred in Lleida, Spain in 2018. The findings emphasize the importance of vigilant food safety practices to prevent such outbreaks.
The first outbreak occurred due to the consumption of salads, while the second outbreak was linked to a cheese omelet. Both groups of students affected by the outbreaks, as well as the food handlers involved in preparing the meals, tested positive for the norovirus.
During the first outbreak, 19 patients fell ill, while the second outbreak had 12 confirmed cases. The median incubation period for the first outbreak was found to be 31 hours, ranging from 27 to 46 hours. Additionally, norovirus was detected in five fecal samples from patients.
The study revealed that the first food handler had symptoms of gastroenteritis even before the arrival of the first school group. In the second outbreak, the median incubation period was 28 hours, with a range of 16 to 49 hours. Four stool samples from patients were found to contain norovirus, and both food handlers tested positive for the virus.
Furthermore, an inspection of the facility uncovered several violations of hygiene standards. The toilets lacked soap dispensers and paper towels, while the kitchen’s handwashing points were also inadequately equipped. Additionally, the researchers observed a failure to follow proper cleaning guidelines for surfaces.
Based on their findings, the researchers strongly recommend that food handlers with symptoms of gastroenteritis should not work for at least 48 hours after the resolution of symptoms. They emphasize the need for adequate handwashing devices and stress the importance of thorough surface cleaning to prevent future outbreaks within the same facility.
These findings serve as a wake-up call for the food service industry and highlight the critical role of food handlers in maintaining public health. It is imperative that proper measures are put in place to ensure the safety of consumers, preventing the occurrence of similar outbreaks in the future.
