Journey of Last Space Shuttle ‘Endeavour’ Set to Begin
Los Angeles, CA – The final trip of the last space shuttle ever built, Endeavour, is expected to commence this month. The California Science Center in Los Angeles is constructing the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center to accommodate Endeavour, which will be arranged in a full-stack configuration, as if ready for launch.
The external tank of Endeavour will be first moved and then lifted into a vertical position, where it will be attached to the solid rocket boosters. Following this, Endeavour itself will be lifted from its horizontal position to its vertical position and attached to the external tank. The entire process of lifting the tank and Endeavour will be streamed online by the California Science Center, allowing space enthusiasts to witness this historic event.
The prelude to the external tank’s lift has been scheduled for January 10. The next day, on January 11, the tank will be lifted and turned upright into a vertical orientation and then attached to the solid rocket boosters. This marks a major milestone in the relocation of Endeavour.
After being moved out of its temporary exhibit space, Endeavour will be rolled onto the lawn and then moved down State Drive. Once in its designated area, the rest of the museum will be constructed around Endeavour, followed by the installation of exhibits. This ambitious project is estimated to cost approximately $400 million and will reshape the skyline surrounding the California Science Center.
The new aerospace museum wing, which will house Endeavour, is aptly named after Samuel Oschin. His foundation played a pivotal role by providing significant financial contributions towards the project.
Endeavour, which was created in Palmdale in 1991 as a replacement for Challenger, completed its remarkable journey through space, participating in 25 missions. Notably, it played a crucial role in repairing the Hubble Space Telescope and contributing to the completion of the International Space Station.
As the preparations for transporting and housing Endeavour continue, the excitement and anticipation among space enthusiasts grow. This journey, expected to begin soon, will be one for the history books, showcasing the remarkable achievements of mankind’s ventures into space.
