Two earthquakes in Mizoram in the last 12 hours have caused great havoc, the intensity of the earthquake was so much that the houses cracked. In fact, on Monday morning, there was a strong shock of 5.3 magnitude earthquake, which damaged the houses and caused cracks in the roads in many places, an official said. Apart from this, many offices have also been damaged while the roof of a church has also been broken.
An official of the state geology and mineral resources department said that there were no reports of any casualties due to the earthquake. He was quoted by the National Center for Seismology as saying that the epicenter of the earthquake which occurred at 4.10 am was in Jokthar in Champhai district on the Indo-Myanmar border.
He said earthquakes were felt in many parts of the state including the capital Aizawl. He said that many houses and buildings in Zokhavthar, including a cathedral, were partially damaged, besides cracks in highways and roads in many places due to the earthquake. The official said that the damage is yet to be fully assessed.
After the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah got to know the state through phone, Mizoram CM Joramthanga thanked the central government for this.
