A fierce spring storm wreaked havoc in the Northeast, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. Heavy snow, rain, and high winds pounded the region, resulting in power outages for hundreds of thousands of residents and tragically claiming at least two lives.
Some areas were buried under over a foot of snow, with certain parts receiving closer to 2 feet. The storm led to treacherous road conditions and numerous vehicle crashes in northern New England and New York. Utility crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to restore power and assess the damage, with nearly 700,000 customers affected.
This April nor’easter was the most significant to hit the region since 2020, bringing snow showers that persisted in northern New York, New England, and the Appalachians through Friday and into Saturday. The heavy snow accumulation also created the potential for avalanches in Vermont and New York.
In West Virginia, flooding along the Ohio River was expected to continue, adding to the already dire situation. Despite the dangers posed by the storm, some residents found solace in the snow and made the most of the wintry conditions.
Tragically, two deaths were reported as a result of the storm. One individual succumbed to injuries caused by a fallen tree in New York, while another lost their life in a house fire in New Hampshire ignited by a fallen tree near propane tanks.
As the region begins to recover from the storm’s wrath, residents are reminded to exercise caution and stay safe during this challenging time.
