Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins is currently not taking part in team drills as contract negotiations continue. The first-round pick from 2019 is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has expressed his desire for a new deal.
Head coach Mike McDaniel has stated that Wilkins firmly believes his performance merits a new contract, a sentiment that the Dolphins organization agrees with. Consequently, Wilkins has decided to abstain from team drills until a resolution is reached.
McDaniel has assured reporters that he has been in constant communication with Wilkins and is comfortable with the situation. The 26-year-old defensive tackle is slated to play on his fifth-year rookie option, which amounts to $10.753 million. After this season, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
Although negotiations are ongoing, Wilkins has actively participated in team activities throughout the offseason, displaying his commitment to the team. The Dolphins have expressed their interest in keeping him in South Florida beyond this season. However, recent large contracts signed by other defensive tackles have potentially increased the price for Wilkins’ extension.
Wilkins is widely regarded as one of the top defensive players on the Dolphins’ roster and would be the third homegrown player to sign a substantial extension under General Manager Chris Grier.
Despite the current situation, the Dolphins remain dedicated to finding a resolution and securing Wilkins’ future with the team. It is evident that both parties have a mutual interest in continuing their partnership, and negotiations are ongoing to ensure a contract that is satisfying for all involved parties.
