President Biden Signs Historic Foreign Aid Package Including Billions in Assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan
President Biden has signed a landmark foreign aid package that includes billions in assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as a provision that could potentially lead to a ban on TikTok in the United States. The aid package, totaling $60.8 billion for Ukraine, $26.4 billion for Israel, and $8.1 billion for allies in the Indo-Pacific, also includes provisions to sell frozen assets of Russian oligarchs.
In addition to the financial aid, the Pentagon has announced a new round of military assistance for Ukraine worth approximately $1 billion, the largest since January 2023. President Biden has stated that the U.S. will begin sending weapons and military equipment to Ukraine immediately to help defend against Russian aggression.
Despite facing a tumultuous path to passage, the aid package received bipartisan support, with the Senate passing it in a bipartisan vote following House approval. Efforts to include border security provisions with the aid package were unsuccessful after former President Trump urged GOP lawmakers to reject the deal.
The final aid package closely resembles what the Senate approved months ago, with provisions aimed at making it more appealing to Republicans. A late addition to the package is a provision that could potentially lead to a ban on TikTok if its parent company does not sell the app within a year.
President Biden has hailed the aid package as a historic moment, emphasizing America’s commitment to supporting its allies and standing against dictators like Vladimir Putin. The package signals a significant boost in U.S. foreign aid and military assistance to key allies in the face of growing global threats.
