Beyond its direct implications on climate, the discovery of this unprecedented loss of ice is essential in understanding the Earth’s energy imbalance and developing accurate energy balance models. Furthermore, a similar study conducted on Antarctic ice shelves indicated that the total ice loss since 1997 doubled when accounting for shrinking ice extent and thinning shelves.
