European Space Agency and ArianeGroup Successfully Conduct Hot-Fire Test for Ariane 6 Rocket
Kourou, French Guiana – The European Space Agency (ESA) and ArianeGroup have achieved a significant milestone in the development of the Ariane 6 rocket. On September 5, they successfully conducted a hot-fire test of the rocket’s core stage at the spaceport in Kourou. This test marks a crucial step in qualifying the Ariane 6 and validating all the necessary operations for a complete launch campaign.
During the test, the prototype of the Ariane 6 core stage was fueled with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellants. The Vulcain 2.1 engine, which powers the rocket, fired for an impressive four seconds. This successful test demonstrates the readiness of the core stage and its propulsion system, bringing the Ariane 6 closer to its inaugural launch.
Originally scheduled for July, the hot-fire test faced delays due to technical issues and a lack of liquid oxygen. However, the ESA and ArianeGroup remained determined and rescheduled the test for August. Unfortunately, it had to be postponed again due to a technical issue with the control bench. Despite these setbacks, the dedicated teams persevered and ultimately achieved success in September.
Looking ahead, another hot-fire test is planned for October 3. This test will further validate the core stage’s performance as the Vulcain 2.1 engine fires for an impressive duration of 470 seconds. Once this long-duration test is complete, the ESA will set a target launch period for the first Ariane 6 rocket. While an exact date has not been announced, it is expected to take place “not too late” in 2024.
The Ariane 6 rocket signifies the beginning of a new era in space transportation. Initially planned for a 2020 launch, the Ariane 6 is regarded as a major advancement in the field. Its successful development and qualification will ensure Europe’s continued access to space for years to come. With cutting-edge technology and innovative design, the Ariane 6 is poised to become a leading player in the global space industry.
