CNN has recently released an informative eight-part guide titled Eat, But Better: Mediterranean Style, which provides expert-backed advice on improving health through diet. In light of this, a 30-year study has revealed alarming findings regarding the consumption of ultraprocessed foods and its correlation with the increased risk of death.
The study, which analyzed data from over 100,000 health professionals in the US, found that individuals who consumed the most ultraprocessed foods had a 4% higher risk of death. This includes a staggering 9% increased risk of neurodegenerative deaths. Particularly, processed meats were identified as having a more significant impact on the risk of death compared to other ultraprocessed foods.
To mitigate this risk, the study recommends limiting the consumption of processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, and potentially artificially sweetened beverages, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a generally healthy diet. Researchers stress the need for a balanced food intake, including colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and mindfulness about additives and sugar levels in ultraprocessed foods.
While the study underscores the crucial role of overall diet quality in reducing the risk of death, further research is needed to determine specific components of ultraprocessed foods that may affect health. These findings shed light on the importance of making informed dietary choices to prioritize long-term health and wellness.
