Jury Selection Begins in Trial of Karen Read, Charged with Second-Degree Murder
Jury selection is set to begin in the trial of Karen Read, who is facing charges of second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe. Demonstrators gathered outside the court in support of Read, claiming her innocence and alleging that she is being framed as part of a police cover-up.
The judge has ordered demonstrators to stay 200 feet away from the court complex and has prohibited the use of megaphones and wearing clothing related to the case. Suffolk University Law Professor believes that finding an impartial jury will be a challenge due to the publicity surrounding the case.
Read’s defense attorneys have filed a motion to use a third-party culprit defense, which has been allowed by Judge Cannone but cannot be opened with. A full list of possible witnesses, including police officers, state troopers, and medical professionals, has been read.
The Commonwealth has 87 witnesses lined up while the defense has 77 witnesses. Approximately 100 potential jurors were brought in, and it could take days to seat them all. Once the jury is selected, the trial is expected to last 6-8 weeks.
The community is closely watching the developments in the trial, with many eager to see how the case unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates as the trial progresses on Jala News.
