Gonzaga Women’s Basketball Team Advances to Sweet 16 with Win Over Utah
Gonzaga’s women’s basketball team secured a spot in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with a strong performance against Utah. Led by Kayleigh Truong’s 21 points and Yvonne Ejim’s 17 points and 13 rebounds, the Zags overcame an early deficit with impressive 3-point shooting.
This victory marks Gonzaga’s 36th consecutive home win, setting up a matchup against top-seeded Texas in the regional semifinal. Contributions from multiple players, including Kaylynne Truong’s 14 points, propelled the team to success.
Despite Utah’s Alissa Pili scoring 35 points in her final game, Gonzaga’s momentum was too much to overcome. Utah’s coach, Lynne Roberts, revealed that the team had faced racist incidents at their hotel before the tournament, adding a layer of complexity to the game.
Gonzaga’s scoring run in the second and third quarters proved to be the difference, allowing them to secure the win and advance. Despite Utah’s late rally, Gonzaga held on to their lead and emerged victorious.
This will be Gonzaga’s fifth appearance in the regional semifinals, a significant achievement for coach Lisa Fortier and the team. Their last Sweet 16 appearance dates back to 2015, marking a milestone in their journey towards the championship.
