Slack, a popular communication platform, has seen some significant changes in leadership over the past year. Since Salesforce acquired the company for $28 billion in 2020, Slack has gone through three CEOs, with Denise Dresser being the latest to take the helm.
Dresser, a University of Massachusetts accounting graduate who worked at Salesforce for 12 years in various executive roles, acknowledges the challenges of stepping into her new role under such circumstances. Previous CEO Lidiane Jones left after just 10 months to become CEO of Bumble.
Despite the turnover in leadership, analysts believe that some changes were expected post-acquisition and do not find the CEO turnover concerning at this point. Dresser aims to build on the work of her predecessors while adding her own touch to the job.
One of the key challenges Dresser faces is the slowing revenue growth at Slack since the acquisition. She must find a way to reverse this trend while also striking a balance between attracting non-Salesforce customers and ensuring Salesforce customers can effectively utilize Slack within the platform.
Additionally, Dresser must navigate the use of generative AI in software development, which is a significant change for the company. This technology helps users harness and understand knowledge within Slack, but it also presents new challenges.
Competition from Microsoft Teams, which integrates with Microsoft’s suite of products, adds to Dresser’s plate. The departure of Slack’s CTO Cal Henderson, who was replaced by Salesforce co-founder and CTO Parker Harris, further complicates matters.
Despite these challenges, Dresser remains passionate about her role and is determined to make human connections while leading Slack within the Salesforce ecosystem. Only time will tell how she navigates these complexities and steers Slack towards future success.
