Title: Axiom Space Prepares for Third Private Astronaut Launch to International Space Station
Houston-based Axiom Space is gearing up for its highly anticipated third private astronaut launch to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Ax-3 mission. Scheduled for January 17th, the mission will see a four-person crew embarking on a 36-hour journey aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The Ax-3 crew is composed of mission commander and former NASA astronaut Michael “LA” López-Alegría, mission specialist Walter Villadei, Turkey’s soon-to-be first astronaut Alper Gezeravcı, and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut reserve member Marcus Wandt. If all goes according to plan, the crew will dock with the ISS on January 19th.
During their 14-day stay aboard the ISS, the crew will conduct vital research focusing on the long-term effects of spaceflight and microgravity on the human body. This includes exploring the potential applications of artificial intelligence in disease detection using audio data analysis.
Upon completion of their research, the crew will make their return to Earth in a Crew Dragon capsule, which will splash down off the coast of Florida. Axiom Space is actively working towards its long-term goal of constructing its own private space station by developing a habitation module to berth with the ISS.
Mission commander Michael López-Alegría brings extensive spaceflight experience to the Ax-3 mission, having participated in three Space Shuttle launches and a Soyuz launch. He currently serves as Axiom’s chief astronaut. Walter Villadei, the mission pilot, has previous experience with Virgin Galactic and plays a crucial role in Italy’s national space strategy as the head of the Italian Air Force’s representative office in the U.S.
Alper Gezeravcı, a fighter pilot with 15 years of experience, will represent Turkey as its first astronaut. Gezeravcı aims to contribute to the global scientific community through the mission’s research. Marcus Wandt, a lieutenant colonel in the Swedish Air Force, will serve as a mission specialist for Ax-3, becoming the second Swede to fly to the ISS.
The Ax-3 mission marks a significant milestone in Axiom Space’s aspirations of establishing a commercial space station in orbit within the next decade. By pushing the boundaries of space exploration and conducting groundbreaking research, Axiom Space is forging new paths, paving the way for a future where space tourism and private space stations become a reality.
