New Study Reveals New Information about Tyrannosaurus Rex Origins in North America
A groundbreaking study published in Scientific Reports has shed new light on the origins of the legendary Tyrannosaurus rex in North America. The research, which involved scientists from the University of Bath (UK), the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, the University of Utah, and other institutions, has identified a previously unknown subspecies of tyrannosaur called Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis.
This newly discovered subspecies is older and more primitive than the well-known T. rex, but just as large. The findings are based on a partial skull that was unearthed in western New Mexico and is now on display at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.
The study challenges the long-standing belief that T. rex originated in North America around 68 million years ago. Instead, the research suggests that this fearsome predator was present in the region millions of years earlier than previously thought, expanding our understanding of their existence.
One of the key discoveries made by the scientists was the subtle differences between the newly discovered tyrannosaur and previously found T. rex skeletons. Despite these variations, both species were about the same size and shared a carnivorous diet, reinforcing the fearsome reputation of the T. rex family.
Furthermore, the study hints at the possibility of more undiscovered tyrannosaur species in the vast region of New Mexico. This raises new questions about the diversity and evolution of these ancient predators and challenges our current understanding of dinosaur history.
The research not only expands our knowledge about tyrannosaurs but also suggests that they were roaming the southern United States at least 72 million years ago. Interestingly, the study also reveals that the larger and more advanced tyrannosaurs evolved in this region compared to those found in Montana and Canada.
The reason behind the sudden northward spread of these giant tyrannosaurs, alongside other enormous horned dinosaurs, remains a mystery. This finding brings attention to the ongoing discoveries being made and the countless mysteries that still surround T. rex and dinosaur evolution.
The study published in Scientific Reports marks a significant step forward in unraveling the complex story of the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex. With every new discovery, scientists inch closer to understanding the origins, behavior, and evolution of this awe-inspiring creature that once ruled the North American continent.
