A recent incident involving a monkey bite at a family gathering in San Antonio has sparked an investigation by Animal Care Services. The incident occurred when a Vervet monkey owned by the family bit an 11-year-old boy on his right ear.
Concerned for the child’s well-being, the family sought medical attention for the bite and promptly reported the incident to ACS. Monkey bites can pose serious health risks, including the transmission of diseases such as rabies, Herpes B virus, HIV, and monkeypox.
Vervet monkeys, native to Southeastern Africa, are known for their fast and agile nature. They typically live in groups called troops with a detailed social hierarchy and can live up to 30 years in the wild. It is worth noting that owning monkeys or other primates in San Antonio is illegal.
The Vervet monkey involved in the incident was surrendered to ACS after its previous owner was cited for various violations, including not having proof of rabies vaccination and possessing a prohibited species. ACS is currently working with the Texas Department of State Health Services and local primate experts to determine the necessary quarantine requirements for the animal.
As the investigation continues, ACS is reminding the public about the dangers of owning exotic animals and the importance of following regulations to ensure public safety. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
