In an effort to address the critical humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the US military is set to build a floating pier and causeway off the coast of Gaza. The Pentagon press secretary announced that the project, which will involve 1,000 military personnel, is expected to take one to two months to complete.
The US government’s goal is to help alleviate the desperate situation facing Palestinians in Gaza, which has been exacerbated by Israel’s actions. Frustration has been mounting at the Israeli government’s lack of recognition of the crisis, prompting the US to take action.
The floating pier will be part of a maritime corridor involving several countries collaborating to deliver aid directly to Gaza. Qatar has already invested $60 million into the project, with discussions ongoing with other organizations to provide support.
Once operational, the pier will be capable of providing 2 million meals per day, with aid being offloaded onto the causeway into Gaza. The initiative is being led by a public-private partnership, with an organization called Fogbow spearheading operations. Pilot programs for the emergency mission are expected to start immediately.
Despite the US military’s involvement, there will be no boots on the ground in Gaza. Humanitarian implementers will handle the distribution of aid, with increased verbal pressure from the US leading to some progress with Israel. This includes the opening of a new land crossing directly into northern Gaza.
The first aid deliveries are expected to begin soon, although the situation in Gaza remains very difficult according to UN officials. The collaborative effort to provide relief to Gaza signifies a step towards addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the Palestinian population.
