Today is the birth day of the living legend and the most popular play back singer of all times, Lata Mangeshkar, who is commonly known as the ‘nightingale of India.’ It is on out a bit of time from all our busy schedules, and paying a tribute to her from our end on everyone’s behalf. As we start talking of her career, it is mandatory to say that Lata Mangeshkar had first recorded her song in the year 1942 while she was only 13 years old. Her talent was revealed right during her teenage and people started loving her voice since then. It was basically the song for a Marathi movie but was later on removed from the album.

However, we hardly see Lata Mangeshkar visiting the studio any longer and her last recorded song was back in the year 2015, in an Indo-Pak gay lovey story. Tracing back from 1942 to that of 2015, she had been recording a total tenure of 73 years with her continuous play back. Mangeshkar’s stunning voice has made her rise as one of the leading singers in Bollywood, so much so, that almost all the filmmakers in the industry have had craved to have a song sung by this legend in their movies. Undoubtedly, she has overpowered almost every competition that came along her way through such a long span of her journey. Almost all of us have had heard about the cold wars going on between the two sisters, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle; and that didn’t let any other third person to get into the frame.

Lata Mangeshkar was born into a talented family, which is quite evident from her career graph as well. She had a family of performers wherein her father used to run a theatre company which further helps the Mangeshkar sisters grow up in the musical culture. The two sisters also had an interest to carry forward the legacy of their father. Right from the very early age, they used to take formal training on classical music.
She was just a teen, while she did master the art of singing Raag Puriya Dhanashree. In one of the former interviews, Lata Mangeshkar had revealed that it was none other than her father who had originally discovered the talent within her. She also mentioned the incident that followed. Adding on to it, she said that it was a situation wherein her father had asked his ‘shagird,’ meaning disciple to practise a raag after work. She has been playing right there and a note got jarred from the shagird’s end, and everytime it happened so, Lata was correcting him. Witnessing this entire scenario, Lata’s father discovered the hidden talent in his daughter and said to Lata’s mother, “We have a singer at home. We never knew it.”

Post the death of her father, Pandeet Deenanath Mangeshkar, Lata moved to Mumbai. She used to take training and music lessons under the supervision of the famous film maker of the 1930s, Master Vinayak. Vinayak used to be a family friend of hers! She did get her first break from Ghulam Haider. Her strongest competitor then used to be Noor Jahan. Post partition, after Noor Jahan based herself in Lahore, her pan India appeal started moving towards Lata instead. Over the time, Lata Mangeshkar became the cosmopolitan voice of the entire Hindustan.

Lata Mangeshkar has sung in almost every genre. One of her best songs was “Aayega aana waala” from Mahal. She even sang in bhajans like “Allah tero naam” and also in dance numbers, such as “Hoton pe aisi baat” to that of romantic songs like “Lag Jaa Gale.” She didn’t miss to sing patriotic songs like “Aye mere watan ke logo,” including several others. In one of her exclusive interviews, Lata Mangeshkar did say that her relationship with Madan Mohan, the famous music composer, was just like a bother and a sister. She even said that “Woh Chup Rahe” from Jahan Ara has been their most favorite collaboration.
In the later span of her career, Lata Mangeshkar established a similar kind of brother-sister relationship with Yash Chopra as well. Some of their famous collaborations include hits like Kabhi Kabhie, Dhool ka Phool, Dil toh pagal hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya le jayenge and Silsila.

Lata Mangeshkar Awards:

Lata Mangeshkar has received her first major break in the year 1948 with the song “Dil Mera Toda” from the film Majboor. Mangeshkar did sing in several languages including that of Bengali, Hindi, Marathi and different other regional languages. She was also honored with the greatest awards such as the Bharat Ratna Award, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Dadasahab Phalke Award. Other than these, she has also received several National and Filmfare awards for multiple times in the course of her career.
