A fire at Senator Bernie Sanders’ Vermont office is currently under investigation as arson, according to local authorities. The incident took place in the vestibule between the elevator and the entrance door to Sanders’ office.
An unknown male suspect entered the vestibule and sprayed an accelerant on the entrance door, igniting it before fleeing the scene. While staff members in the office were put in danger by the fire, thankfully no injuries were reported. However, the fire did cause damage to the entrance door and led to water damage in other parts of the building.
The suspect remains at large as police continue to investigate the incident. The Burlington Fire and Police Departments were quick to respond, for which Sanders’ state director expressed gratitude. Additionally, U.S. Capitol Police and the Senate Sergeant at Arms are working with local first responders in coordinating the investigation.
The Burlington Fire Marshal’s office, Burlington Police Department, and Vermont State Police are all involved in the joint investigation. Capitol Police have noted an increase in threat assessment cases over the past year, including instances involving concerning statements and direct threats.
Despite the frightening ordeal, Sanders, who is currently serving his third term as senator, was unharmed in the fire. Authorities are urging anyone with information on the arson to come forward and assist in their investigation.
