The United States’ Veto on Palestinian UN Membership Triggers International Backlash
In a recent session at the United Nations Security Council, a draft resolution recommending full membership for the State of Palestine in the United Nations was vetoed by the United States. The vote saw 12 members in favor, with the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstaining, and the US casting the decisive veto.
The decision has sparked strong reactions from various countries and organizations around the world. The Palestinian Authority and Hamas condemned the veto, arguing that it hinders the path towards Palestinian statehood. Iran went a step further, calling Washington’s actions irresponsible.
Qatar expressed deep regret at the failure of the resolution to pass, while Egypt and Turkey voiced their disappointment. On the other hand, Israel’s Foreign Minister praised the US for its veto, denouncing the resolution as a “shameful proposal.”
The United States defended its stance by citing concerns about Palestine’s readiness for statehood and the presence of Hamas within its territory. However, Russia criticized the US for showing bias towards Israel and ignoring the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Norway, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Pakistan, also expressed regret and disappointment over the UNSC’s inability to come to a consensus on granting Palestine full UN membership.
The veto has laid bare the deep divisions within the international community on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the US firmly siding with Israel while facing harsh criticism from other nations for its stance. The issue is likely to remain a contentious topic at the UN in the coming months.
