CNN recently launched a new newsletter series titled ‘Fitness, But Better’ aimed at helping readers ease into a healthy routine with the guidance of experts. This initiative comes in the wake of a recent study that suggests a strong link between physical activity and improved sleep quality.
The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, analyzed data from over 4,300 individuals aged 39 to 67 in nine European countries over a 10-year period. Results showed that those who maintained consistent physical activity were 55% more likely to be normal sleepers, while those who increased their physical activity over time were 21% more likely to have normal sleep duration.
Doctor Erla Björnsdóttir, lead researcher of the study, highlighted the importance of regular exercise in reducing the risk of insomnia and short sleep duration. Health care professionals believe that exercise can be an additional tool in treating insomnia, along with medication and therapy.
While the study does not claim that exercise alone can cure insomnia, experts agree that physical activity can significantly enhance sleep quality and duration. Starting with moderate-intensity exercises like walking or yoga is recommended to experience the sleep benefits.
Furthermore, spending time outdoors and being physically active can positively impact circadian rhythms, leading to better nighttime sleep and daytime alertness. As more research supports the connection between physical activity and improved sleep, individuals are encouraged to incorporate exercise into their daily routines for overall health and well-being.
